Summary
Michigan's premier civil rights law prohibits discrimination in employment, housing, and public accommodations based on religion, race, color, national origin, age, sex, height, weight, familial status, or marital status.
Rights & Rules
- 01.An employer cannot refuse to hire you, or fire you, based on your race, sex, age, or religion.
- 02.A landlord cannot refuse to rent to you based on your marital status or because you have children.
- 03.Michigan is one of the very few states that explicitly protects against discrimination based on your HEIGHT and WEIGHT.
- 04.In 2023, the law was officially amended to explicitly include 'sexual orientation' and 'gender identity or expression' under the definition of sex discrimination.
Penalties
- 01.Victims of discrimination can file a complaint with the Michigan Department of Civil Rights or sue directly in court for damages, back pay, and attorney's fees.
