Minnesota Paid Family and Medical Leave
Summary
Starting in 2026, Minnesota workers will have access to a state-run program providing up to 20 weeks of paid time off for major medical or family events.
Rights & Rules
- 01.You can take up to 12 weeks of paid leave to care for a new child or a sick family member, or up to 12 weeks for your own serious health condition.
- 02.If you need both in the same year, the total combined leave is capped at 20 weeks.
- 03.The state program will pay a percentage of your regular wages during this time, funded by a small payroll tax split between employers and employees.
- 04.Your employer MUST hold your job for you while you are on leave and maintain your health insurance.
Penalties
- 01.Employers who interfere with an employee's right to take leave, or who fire them in retaliation, can be sued for double damages, lost wages, and attorney's fees.
