New York Concealed Carry Improvement Act (CCIA)

Summary

After the Supreme Court struck down NY's old gun permit law in 2022, NY passed the CCIA. It makes getting a permit possible but strictly bans carrying guns in massive 'sensitive locations' and on all private property unless explicitly permitted.

Rights & Rules

  • 01.
    You no longer have to prove a 'special need' for self-defense to get a concealed carry permit.
  • 02.
    HOWEVER, to get the permit, you must now pass 16 hours of classroom training, 2 hours of live-fire training, and provide the police with character references.
  • 03.
    You are absolutely BANNED from carrying a gun in 'sensitive locations' (including Times Square, subways, buses, parks, schools, bars, and stadiums).
  • 04.
    The 'Vampire Rule': You CANNOT carry your gun into any private business (like a store or restaurant) UNLESS the owner has put up a clear sign saying 'Guns Welcome Here'.

Penalties

  • 01.
    Carrying a firearm into a restricted sensitive location or into a private business without permission is a Class E felony.
