Ohio Medical Marijuana Law

Summary

Before legalizing recreational use in 2023, Ohio established a strict Medical Marijuana Control Program. It allows patients with specific severe conditions to purchase and use cannabis.

Rights & Rules

  • 01.
To participate, a certified Ohio doctor must diagnose you with a 'qualifying medical condition' (like Cancer, PTSD, Epilepsy, or Chronic Pain) and enter you into the Patient Registry.
  • 02.
You can purchase marijuana in the form of oils, tinctures, plant material (flower), edibles, and patches from state-licensed dispensaries.
  • 03.
Smoking medical marijuana via combustion (lighting it on fire) is technically prohibited under the medical law; the law only permits VAPING the plant material.
  • 04.
Employers are NOT required to accommodate your medical marijuana use. You can still be fired for a positive drug test, even if you are a registered patient.

Penalties

  • 01.
Using medical marijuana via smoking/combustion violates the program rules. Buying from an unlicensed dealer remains a criminal offense.
