Pennsylvania Voter ID Laws
Summary
Unlike strict Voter ID states, Pennsylvania generally does NOT require you to show photo identification to vote, with one major exception for first-time voters.
Rights & Rules
- 01.If you have voted at your polling place before, you do NOT need to show any form of ID to vote. You simply sign the poll book, and the poll worker matches your signature.
- 02.If you are voting for the FIRST time in a specific election district, you MUST show ID.
- 03.For first-time voters, the ID does not have to be a photo ID. You can use a PA driver's license or passport, BUT you can also use a non-photo ID like a recent utility bill, bank statement, or paycheck that shows your name and current address.
- 04.If you do not have ID when required, you have the right to cast a 'provisional ballot,' which will be counted if the county election board verifies your identity later.
Penalties
- 01.If a poll worker illegally demands ID from a returning voter and denies them the right to vote, the voter can file a complaint with the County Board of Elections or the Department of State.
