Texas E-Verify Law (SB 3)
Summary
Texas law requires all state agencies, public universities, and private businesses that receive government contracts to use the federal E-Verify system to check the immigration status of all new employees.
Rights & Rules
- 01.If you are hired by the State of Texas or by a company doing business with the State of Texas, they MUST run your information through the federal E-Verify database.
- 02.E-Verify checks your Social Security Number or Alien Registration Number against federal records to ensure you are legally authorized to work in the US.
- 03.Private businesses that do NOT have state contracts are not required by state law to use E-Verify, though they must still complete standard federal I-9 forms.
Penalties
- 01.Contractors who fail to use E-Verify can have their state contracts immediately terminated and can be barred from bidding on future state contracts.
