California Animal Fur Ban

In 2023, California became the first state in the nation to completely ban the sale, display, and manufacturing of new animal fur products.

Rights & Rules

  • 01.
    You cannot buy or sell new clothing, shoes, or accessories made from animal fur (like mink, fox, chinchilla, or rabbit) in any retail store in California.
  • 02.
    The ban applies to both physical storefronts and online sales shipped to California addresses.
  • 03.
    EXCEPTIONS: It is still legal to sell used/vintage fur at thrift stores or pawn shops. It is also legal to sell leather, cowhide, shearling, and sheepskin.
  • 04.
    You can still legally wear fur that you already own.

Penalties

  • 01.
    Retailers caught selling new fur can be fined $500 for the first violation, $750 for the second, and $1,000 for every subsequent violation.
