California Right to Repair Act (SB 244)

Summary

Starting in July 2024, California has the strongest electronics Right to Repair law in the nation, forcing manufacturers to supply parts, tools, and manuals to consumers and independent repair shops for up to 7 years.

Rights & Rules

  • 01.
    If a device costs between $50 and $99.99, the manufacturer must provide parts and manuals for at least 3 years after they stop manufacturing the product.
  • 02.
    If the device costs $100 or more (like most smartphones and laptops), they must provide parts and manuals for at least 7 years.
  • 03.
    Manufacturers must sell these parts to independent repair shops and individual consumers on 'fair and reasonable terms.'
  • 04.
    The law covers almost all electronics and appliances sold after July 1, 2021, but EXEMPTS video game consoles, farm equipment, and motor vehicles.

Penalties

  • 01.
    The California Attorney General or local district attorneys can sue manufacturers who refuse to comply, seeking fines of $1,000 per day for the first violation, up to $5,000 per day for subsequent violations.
