Colorado Agricultural Right to Repair Act

Summary

Colorado was the first state to guarantee farmers the legal right to repair their own tractors, combines, and agricultural equipment without being forced to use the manufacturer's authorized dealers.

Rights & Rules

  • 01.
Equipment manufacturers (like John Deere) MUST provide farmers and independent mechanics with access to the necessary software, parts, tools, and manuals needed to fix the machinery.
  • 02.
Manufacturers must provide these tools and parts at a 'fair and reasonable' cost.
  • 03.
You cannot be locked out of your tractor's engine computer simply because you want to change a part yourself.
  • 04.
This law only applies to agricultural equipment and wheelchairs, not consumer electronics like smartphones.

Penalties

  • 01.
If a manufacturer refuses to provide the parts or software, the Colorado Attorney General can sue them for violating the Colorado Consumer Protection Act, seeking fines of up to $20,000 per violation.
