Summary
This law prohibits debt collectors from using abusive, deceptive, or unfair practices to collect debts from consumers.
Rights & Rules
- 01.Collectors cannot contact you at inconvenient times or places, such as before 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m.
- 02.You can stop a collector from contacting you by sending a written request.
- 03.Collectors cannot use profane language or threaten violence.
- 04.You have the right to demand verification of the debt within 30 days of the first contact.
Penalties
- 01.Up to $1,000 in statutory damages per lawsuit.
- 02.Recovery of actual damages for physical or emotional distress.
- 03.Payment of the consumer's legal fees and court costs.
