New York Digital Fair Repair Act
Summary
New York was the first state to require electronics manufacturers (like Apple and Samsung) to make diagnostic tools, parts, and repair manuals available to independent repair shops and consumers.
Rights & Rules
- 01.If a company sells consumer electronics in New York, they MUST sell replacement parts and specialized tools to you or a local repair shop on fair and reasonable terms.
- 02.Companies must publicly post the same repair manuals they give to their internal technicians.
- 03.The law covers cell phones, laptops, and tablets.
- 04.Major exemptions: The law does NOT cover medical devices, motor vehicles, home appliances, or agricultural equipment. It also only applies to devices manufactured AFTER July 1, 2023.
Penalties
- 01.The New York Attorney General can fine manufacturers $500 for the first violation and up to $1,000 for subsequent violations for refusing to sell parts or manuals.
