Oregon Self-Serve Gas Law

Summary

After 72 years, Oregon finally legalized self-serve gas statewide in 2023, but heavily populated counties still require stations to offer full-service pumps.

Rights & Rules

  • 01.
You have the right to pump your own gas anywhere in the state.
  • 02.
Gas stations CANNOT charge you a higher price for full-service (where the attendant pumps it) than they do for self-service.
  • 03.
In major counties (like Multnomah and Clackamas), gas stations with more than four pumps MUST still keep at least half of their pumps staffed with attendants between 6 AM and 6 PM.
  • 04.
In rural counties (like Malheur or Lake), a gas station can be 100% self-serve 24 hours a day.

Penalties

  • 01.
A gas station that fails to staff the required number of full-service pumps in a heavily populated county can be fined up to $500 per day by the State Fire Marshal.
