Rhode Island Automatic Renewal (Subscription) Law

Summary

Rhode Island law protects consumers from 'subscription traps.' It requires businesses to make it incredibly easy to cancel online subscriptions and free trials before they automatically renew.

Rights & Rules

  • 01.
If you sign up for a subscription online (like a streaming service, gym membership, or meal kit), the business MUST allow you to cancel that subscription entirely online, without forcing you to make a phone call.
  • 02.
Businesses must clearly and conspicuously disclose the recurring terms BEFORE you enter your credit card information.
  • 03.
If a free trial converts into a paid subscription, the business must send you a clear reminder notice before they charge your card.

Penalties

  • 01.
Any products or services sent to a consumer under an illegal auto-renewal contract are legally considered 'unconditional gifts.' The consumer can keep the product and sue the company for a full refund of the charges.
